A search result or star rating is a starting point, not proof that a provider is right for your project.

Build a shortlist you can check

Start with recommendations and providers that can explain whether they take on your kind of project. Look for a consistent business name, contact details, and a clear description of who will do the work.

Confirm any licensing requirements with the relevant local authority and ask for evidence of insurance. Requirements differ by location, so do not rely on a generic 'licensed everywhere' claim.

Read reputation signals with context

Read reviews critically. Look for descriptions of similar work, how problems were handled, and whether the business's response makes sense. Search the business name alongside terms such as complaint or scam.

Ask for references relevant to your job and clarify the provider's role if subcontractors will be involved. A directory listing on Roofing Hound is not a certification, a paid endorsement, or confirmation of current availability.

Turn the conversation into a written proposal

The FTC advises comparing written estimates. Ask for the work, materials, price, and expected timing in writing. A large difference between proposals should lead to a question, not an automatic choice.

Our additional planning questions: who supervises the job, how access and cleanup are handled, what is excluded, and how changes will be approved. Keep each answer with the proposal.

  • Business identity and the appropriate credentials
  • Insurance evidence and relevant references
  • Written scope, materials, price, and timing
  • Warranty terms and a process for changes

Slow down before signing

Read the agreement and resolve blank or unclear terms. Avoid pressure to sign immediately or pay the full project cost upfront. Keep copies of the documents you sign.

Roofing Hound can make an introduction during its free manual service, but you select and contract with the provider independently. Confirm qualifications, availability, terms, and insurance yourself before hiring.
