You can gather useful observations without climbing onto the roof. Leave diagnosis and roof access to an appropriate professional.
Record indoor observations from a safe location
Note where you first saw a stain, drip, or change in a surface. Record whether the area changes during or after rainfall. Do not approach wet electrical equipment, stand beneath a bulging ceiling, or enter an unsafe attic.
Photograph the room and a closer view only where safe. A photo showing the location in context can help a provider understand the problem before a visit.
- Room and approximate location
- Date first noticed and any later changes
- Whether the issue is active or intermittent
- Nearby fixtures or previous repair areas
Observe the exterior from the ground
Once weather conditions are safe, look for obvious changes such as visible missing roof covering or displaced gutters. Use a safe vantage point and record what you can actually see.
Avoid translating an observation into a diagnosis. A provider may need to inspect roof details that are not visible from the ground. It is fine to say that you do not know the roof material or age.
Gather the history you already have
Find earlier invoices, warranties, inspection photos, and notes about a previous leak. Tell the provider if the current issue is near a repaired area or started after other work.
Our suggested goal is a one-page description, not a complete inspection report. Share the facts you know and mark the unknowns so they can be checked.
Use the record to arrange the next step
Ask the provider what the inspection covers, what it costs, and whether you will receive a written explanation and photographs. If the leak is active or there is an immediate hazard, use the emergency checklist and contact help directly.
Roofing Hound's manual service can help look for a provider for non-emergency follow-up. An online request does not book an inspection or establish availability.
